5 Ways to Affirm Yourself This Valentine’s Day
On Valentine’s Day, some of us celebrate. Others groan and roll their eyes. A few might shed a tear. Regardless of relationship status, we can all show appreciation for one person: ourselves. During this annual day of love, affirm yourself with these self-care practices.
Write down three affirmations
Affirmations can serve as reminders to take care of yourself. Whether you write or read these positive, encouraging statements, affirmations can help you stay focused on your well-being. This Valentine’s Day, make a list of three personal affirmations, such as “I am worthy of love,” “I deserve to care for myself,” and “Self-care is valuable.”
You might even feel inspired to write a poem based on each affirmation. Consider a moment in which you felt heartbroken, for example, and explore what this experience taught you about self-love. If you want to take this practice a step further, design a self-care journal with a dedicated space for affirmation-inspired poems.
Incorporate aromatherapy into your routine
For thousands of years, humans have used essential oils for both healing purposes and spiritual practices. This Valentine’s Day, take care of yourself by incorporating aromatherapy into your daily routine. As you build your collection, search for high-quality, ethically and sustainably sourced oils. Consider starting with a versatile oil like lavender, which helps support feelings of anxiety, depression, and sleep.
When you begin using essential oils, pair this practice with other calming activities. Place a drop of oil in your hand, take a few deep breaths, and recite affirmations for a deeper meditative moment. To increase focus and creativity, diffuse oils as you read and write.
Plant an herb garden
As a twist on the traditional flower bouquet, plant an herb garden! Show some love for your local garden center by purchasing supplies from one of your favorite small businesses. Choose herbs that visually complement each other, planting in a container for added creativity, further playing on the bouquet theme.
Organize a Galentine’s Day event
Spending time with friends is an integral part of self-care. Friends remind us of our worth, value, and unique talents. They pick us up when we’re down, help us find ourselves when we’re lost, and let us know we’re loved.
Ever since Parks and Recreation’s Leslie Knope declared Feb. 13 Galentine’s Day, a fun twist on the traditional holiday, friends take the day to recognize the importance of sisterhood (although anyone can participate, regardless of gender).
Follow Leslie’s lead by celebrating friendship with a Galentine’s Day event! In addition to sharing snacks and beverages, spread the love by encouraging each guest to write a poem about another friend at the event.
Read a book with a cup of tea
End this year’s day of love by reading your favorite book while sipping a calming cup of tea. Practice self-care by letting your mind escape into a beloved story or poetry collection, allowing yourself to rest. You deserve it!
